Dr Tongai Maponga, Stellenbosch University
Dr Tongai Maponga is currently a Senior Medical Scientist and Researcher in the Division of Medical Virology at University of Stellenbosch and the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS). He holds a PhD from the University of Stellenbosch (2016).
He has interests in virology and immunology, with a focus on epidemiology, molecular characterization, and pathogenesis of hepatitis viruses. Tongai has been recognized with prestigious fellowships, including the Africa-Oxford (AfOx) Initiative Visiting Scholar Fellowship in 2018.
Dr Maponga’s current research is supported by grants from institutions such as the AfOx Initiative through a Research Development Award, the Poliomyelitis Research Foundation, National Research Foundation, and the University of California San Diego Center for AIDS Research (UCSD-CFAR).
